History of Meth
Amphetamines were first synthesized in Germany in the late 1800's. They were largely disregarded for 40 years until they started to be used in treating depression and other illnesses. Methamphetamine is the methylated form of amphetamine and is easier to make. It is also available as a water soluble powder which allows it to be injected intravenously. Methamphetamine was given to German soldiers in World War II in an effort to keep them awake and alert. Factory workers were given methamphetamine to keep them working for longer hours. It was during the Korean war that Elvis Presley first started using amphetamines. It was this addiction that cost him his life. Maybe if he had been admitted to an addiction rehab clinic he would still be alive today? After the second world war meth abuse escalated in Japan where surplus war supplies were distributed to the general public. Methamphetamines became a fashionable way to lose weight. Because more people were using the drug the rate of addiction increased. People were using meth for a wide variety of reasons without realizing the danger. Amphetamines were very popular throughout the 1950's and 1960's. The general public saw them as a way to boost productivity and stay alert. As more and more people developed dependence and addiction controls on amphetamines were tightened. Sales of methamphetamine were banned as this form of amphetamine was being injected and abused. The popularity of Meth waned until the end of the 20th century. Recipes that enabled the creation of meth in cheap "kitchen laboratories" made the drug readily available and affordable even to children. Today children as young as 12 are becoming addicted to meth and needing to be admitted to residential adolescent treatment centers in South Africa. Meth usage is a growing problem in South Africa and many other countries. Meth labs can spring up even in the middle of a suburb and are protected by gangs. Sales of meth is a major source of income to criminal gangs. Because meth is so easily available and cheap it is becoming the most popular stimulant. Where cocaine is the domain of the urban executive meth is the drug for the masses. We Do Recover understands that meth has a long history and isn't just a flash in the pan problem.
