Drug rehab: why it might fail
How can it be that so many drug rehab programs fail to help the addict find recovery? Is it something to do with the program or is it all because of the patient?
One possible cause for a drug rehab program failing could be that the patient does not make a complete break from the environment associated with drug use. A rehabilitation clinic should be a self-contained micro environment that completely immerses the client in a recovery orientated lifestyle. If the client is still engaged in aspects of his/her old lifestyle then the old using habits are going to be that much harder to break. In other words, a client should make a clean break and view drug rehab as a long term solution.
Even though addiction is not a habit, it does have elements of ritual attached to it. The drug and alcohol treatment facilities in South Africa that We Do Recover refers to all provide a safe and serene environment to help the addict break the habits associated with addiction. By relieving the pressure and removing any triggers that normally precipitate relapse the clinics are able to teach their clients how to live life successfully without the use of drugs or alcohol.
A comprehensive drug rehabilitation program should teach a new way of living in a structured and encouraging environment. Clients should be helped to reclaim their sense of dignity and self-respect which will help them to build confidence in themselves. This aids their social functioning and speeds their return to productive life. An alcohol treatment clinic should have a fun element to it as well so that clients learn to socialise and enjoy themselves without the presence of drink or drugs.
The time spent in this nurturing environment gives alcoholics and addicts a new perspective on life and refreshes their understanding of themselves. Clients are empowered to take responsibility in making proactive life choices to address the problems they face in daily life. A graduate from a drug rehab in South Africa has established new habits and found new skills to cope with the demands of life. They have insight into their psychological functioning and are on the path to freedom from shame.
It is the clients responsibility to follow the suggestions of the treatment staff of the drug rehab (see my earlier blog posting). But unless that staff gives good advice the clients efforts will be wasted. A successful treatment outcome comes from matching the individual to a program that will best suit his/her individual needs.
Once the client leaves the addiction treatment center she should engage in an Aftercare program of some sort. Many of the drug rehabs in South Africa offer an extended period of time where graduates may return to the clinic and attend groups or counseling sessions. Graduates should also attend a mutual help support group of some sort. Clients would do very well to attend a step-down facility which helps to bridge the gap between residential treatment and returning to daily life.
