Detoxification (detox) in drug and alcohol rehab centers
detoxification, or detox for short, is the first step in a drug or alcohol rehab treatment program. If a person uses a drug or alcohol for a long time then their body eventually develops a dependence for the drug or alcohol. This means that if they stop using the substance their body will have withdrawal symptoms. detox is the process of removing all traces of chemicals from the body so that the person can participate in the drug or alchol rehab program with a clear mind and healthy body. If there are chemicals left in the body the client will experience cravings and a strong desire to use more.
Withdrawal symptoms vary from substance to substance but typically include sweating, shaking, headaches, intense cravings, nausea and vomiting, cramps, diarrha, insomnia, anxiety, confusion and depression.
Certain types of drugs are more dangerous to withdraw from than others. People coming off opiates and alcohol are generally recommended to seek medical advice in a specialist detoxification (detox) center. Other drugs such as marijuana, crystal meth, and cocaine may not need constant medical supervision but a trip to your doctor is still strongly recommended.
What is Rapid detox?
Rapid detox is a new development in the field of addiction treatment. It is a method of removing drugs from the body that is performed while the patient is under general anesthesia. This means that it is generally performed in hospitals or clinics where there are specialist medical resources available. A qualified anesthesiologist may be required to oversee the process. Rapid detox is most commonly used for removing opiates from the body but can be used for other drugs as well. While the patient is under anesthesia he/she is administered medications that accelerate the physical withdrawal process. Instead of detoxification (detox) lasting 7-10 days it can be accomplished in 4-6 hours.
