At the root of any screening for addiction lies the question "Is the behaviour causing problems?". A sexual practice that causes no problems would not be classified as an addiction, even if it is outside of societal norms.

An eating disorder is an all encompassing problem that affects every part of a person's life. They are characterised by a compulsion to eat or to avoid eating that negatively affects the persons physical and mental wellbeing. The eating disorder generates an obsession with weight and with what has or has not been eaten. How a person feels at school, work, or any other situation is determined by the eating disorder.

Eating disorders are often painted with the same brush as addictions but are actually quite seperate processes that require specialized treatment. People with an eating disorder often have co-occurring mental health issues, particularly ones related to self-esteem. There are several forms of eating disorder that manifest very different symptoms. People with an eating disorder struggle with their self-image and emotional world on a daily basis. This article introduces a few of the types of eating disorders.

For the majority of people who go to a casino and place bets on slot machines, sports events, or other games this is a fun and relaxing activity. They do not spend more than they can afford to lose and are able to go home to lead a fulfilled life.

The internet replaces these activities and becomes a compulsive behaviour that completely subsumes the addict's life. It is also known as internet dependency and internet compulsivity.
The people presenting for an addiction treatment program because of their internet addiction are generally at their wits end having discovered that they are in the grip of an addiction and are unable to stop using the internet without assistance.

It is possible to become addicted to behaviours such as gambling, eating, sexual activity, work, internet usage, or other processes. Collectively this form of addiction are known as process addictions. These addictions are just as devastating as an addiction to a substance.
