Percocet Addiction
Percocet is a combination of two painkillers and is in the class of drugs known as narcotic analgesics. It contains a mixture of oxycodone and acetaminophen (paracetemol) and is an effective pain killer for moderate to severe pain. Because it contains oxycodone it is considered an opiate. Percocet can be abused and is scheduled to make it more difficult to obtain. It has a high potential for addiction and needs to be carefully monitored.
Drug rehab: History of Hydrocodone
Hydrocodone is a semi-synthetic opioid that was first created in Germany in the 1920's. It was hoped that by bonding hydrogen to codeine molecules the resulting medication would be less toxic and easier to digest.
Why is OxyContin so addictive?
Oxycodone is an opioid analgesic medication that was first developed in 1916 in Germany, as one of several new semi-synthetic opioids with several benefits over the older traditional opiates. It is very popular in the prescription pain killer market partly because of its longer release time. OxyContin is effective in releasing its active ingredient, oxycodone, over a 12 hour period which provides pain relief for much longer than traditional painkillers.
OxyContin is an abuseable drug and is one of the most tightly controlled substances that have a commonly accepted medical use. People found ways of using OxyContin that would bypass the 12 hour release time so that all of the oxycodone was released at once. This led to several overdose cases that ended up in ER or in death.
Lorazepam (Ativan)
Lorazepam is the generic name of the drug marketed as Ativan or Temesta. It is a benzodiazepine and has a short to medium duration of action. It has powerful anxiolytic (anxiety reducing) effects. It also has sedative/hypnotic (sleep inducing), anticonvulsant, and muscle relaxant effects. It is primarily used to treat anxiety and has a relatively high addictive potential. Lorazepam can be used for patients undergoing chaemotherapy to help prevent them from vomiting. It is occasionally prescribed in drug rehab centers in South Africa during the initial detoxification phase but is not favoured for long-term use.
Hydrocone Addiction
Hydrocodone is a semi-synthetic opioid derived from two of the naturally occurring opiates, codeine and thebaine. Hydrocodone is an orally active pain killer and cough suppressant. It is commonly available in tablet, capsule, and syrup form and is often synthesized with other analgesic compounds like acetaminophen (paracetemol) or ibuprofen. Hydrocone is known to be habit forming and can lead to addiction. Admission to a drug rehab in South Africa can help you to break the cycle of Hydrocodone addiction.
