Alcoholism
30/01/2010
Alcoholism: Recognised by the World Health Organisation (WHO) and other leading medical authorities as a chronic disease in which the physical craving / compulsion and the mental obsession to drink is so strong that the alcoholic drinks despite the negative consequences that are caused or made worse through their drinking.
This persists in the face of detriment to health, social standing, family relationships, financial difficulty etc. Alcoholism rehabilitation is often necessary at an inpatient treatment centre that provides detoxification and counselling services to allow the alcoholic to enter recovery.
