Is Alcohol A Drug?
Alcohol is generally a socially acceptable way to relax and is commonly associated with celebration and recreation. Alcohol is served in restaurants, at sporting events, and in private homes. It is sold in supermarkets and the only restriction on its sale is that you have to be an adult to buy it. All of this contributes to the perception that alcohol is not a drug.
Drug addiction is an illness characterized by compulsion, loss of control, and continued repetition of using behaviour in spite of adverse consequenses. Addicts are obsessed with obtaining and using their drug. Addiction is a chronic and progressive illness which means that it lasts a long time and gets worse as time goes by.
Alcoholism is the disease of being addicted to alcohol. An alcoholic will drink compulsively without consideration of consequence. The alcoholic will resort to dishonesty or theft in order to obtain alcohol and be able to drink it. Alcoholics who arrive in an alcohol treatment clinic describe how their drinking progressed over time. Alcoholics are, in short, addicts who have chosen alcohol as their drug. Alcohol is a drug like any other.
We are fortunate to live in an age where the stigma attached to alcoholism is beginning to diminish. Gone are the days when alcoholics are locked up in dingy psychiatric hospitals with no hope of treatment. There are now effective treatments for alcoholism that can help remove the dependency, and free the alcoholic from the obsession to drink. Treatment can be offered in a residential treatment program such as offered in an alcohol rehabilitation clinic or in mutual help groups such as Alcoholics Anonymous. We Do Recover can help you to find a treatment option that will help you to detox safely and achieve lasting sobriety. Contact us today to find out more.
Chronic use of alcohol leads to dependency. In this situation the body has become accustomed to alcohol and requires it to be present in order to function. If the alcoholic stops drinking abruptly he/she will experience withdrawal symptoms. These can be dangerous (even life threatening) for alcoholics and you should consult with a physician and obtain expert help in undergoing this detoxification (detox). Talk to your physician about admission to a specialist alcohol rehab with proper medical supervision.
Perhaps one of the reasons that people don't acknowledge that alcohol is a drug is because of the stigma of drug addiction. The truth is that alcoholism must not be underestimated. Alcohol is a drug and is a cunning enemy of life. The disease of alcoholism is life threatening and if left untreated will progress until the alcoholic's entire life is subsumed into the quest to obtain and drink alcohol. No matter how terrible the consequences the alcoholic will addictively seek out alcohol. Detoxification (detox) followed by a comprehensive alcohol treatment program is a good way to break this cycle of self-destruction.
After completing a residential alcohol rehab the alcoholic should seriously contemplate admission to a step-down facility or attendance at an outpatient alcohol rehab program. This will help to consolidate the lessons learned in rehab and improve the chances of maintaining meaningful sobriety.
